This $266 wireless speaker with two passive radiators will literally blow your mind

While surprisingly similar to Devialet Mania, which was released just a few months ago, the dB1 Doublebass from ub+ actually predates Mania by almost a year. Released earlier this year, the dB1 Doublebass looks and feels like a premium hi-fi audio unit, but offers a much more affordable price tag for this premium design. The speaker also houses two 5.2-inch passive radiators on either side that vibrate violently to create a stunning audio-visual experience, and a massive 4.5-inch woofer inside its relatively compact, portable design. Smaller than a soccer ball in diameter, the dB1 Doublebass can dwarf speakers three times its size with its ability to pump sound up to 90 decibels… and for roughly the same price as the Apple AirPods Pro.

The dB1’s multi-sensory appeal begins with its exterior design that rivals even the Mania. The spherical form of the loudspeaker has an elegant and sculptural appearance with its geometric grille detail inspired by flowers on the front. There’s not much to the speaker in terms of its silhouette. Everything, including the rotary knob on the top and the two passive radiators on either side, sits flush with its spherical outline…but that’s just until the music starts playing. Then everything changes.

When the music starts playing, the dB1 transforms from a stylish speaker into a sonic sculpture, with two passive radiators on the side vibrating violently to create a rich, immersive sound that gives goosebumps on your neck. The human ear doesn’t really handle bass well, but the body senses it (which is why you feel the drumbeat in your chest at concerts), and the two passive emitters on the sides of the dB1 do just that, creating “moving” bass. joyful’.

At the same time, the dB1’s built-in 4.5″ bass driver and 1.5″ tweeter (made of silk) give the wireless speaker a 40Hz to 20,000Hz range, covering a wide frequency gamut to create a full-range soundscape with minimal latency and distortion.

The speaker is only 7.2 inches in diameter and can be used in a variety of ways. The leather handle on the top makes it easy to carry (it’s also IPx5 water resistant, making it well-suited for outdoor use), while the speaker’s flat-like base keeps it stable on tabletop surfaces. However, given its sculptural design, the dB1 pairs perfectly with its accompanying tripod, transforming it into a floor-standing sound experience unit that can be placed anywhere in the house to create the perfect soundstage. In fact, thanks to its ‘Matrix Connect’ feature, UB+ lets you pair up to 8 dB1 Speakers together. However, don’t expect your neighbors to appreciate it.

The speaker uses a single button at the top that controls its experience. The knurled surface is easy to grip and turn (given the dB1 sits relatively flat on its design), and a tap lets you play/pause your music. The dB1 also connects to your phone via Bluetooth 5.3, allowing you to seamlessly play music, videos, podcasts and anything else with minimal distortion and lag. Want to better manage your voice? The UB+ app gives you precise control over your speaker (or multiple speakers in your home). You can configure it to work with your television as right and left channels, or you can make it work independently by playing different music in different parts of the house.

The dB1 comes in three colors – white, matte silver and black and ships with a matching anodized aluminum tripod stand. The four 2,500mAh batteries inside give the speaker an incredible 20 hours of runtime, and it has the ability to charge via USB-C when it’s running low. Oh, and did I mention this bad boy has a 3.5mm audio jack?!

With a $266 price tag, the dB1 is really hard to fault. As a speaker it looks outstanding and for a speaker of the same price it sounds ridiculously good. It also skips the ‘smart speaker’ bullshit and focuses on what really matters – the actual performance of the speaker, especially in a way that will really excite audiophiles.
