Gayle Fisher is a mother of two who navigates the field of mental health resources in Texas communities. She has always struggled to find resources, but her struggle has only gotten worse in recent years, she says.
“Texas is dying for extra help to the family. Even the county we live in doesn’t have enough resources. I have mom friends and we just get together ourselves and get information and share resources,” Fisher said.
Fisher and his friends are among tens of thousands of Texans struggling to find help. Jamie Freeny, of the Mental Health of Greater Houston, America, says the need for mental health resources in his community is much greater than what is available.
“According to Mental Health America, Texas ranks last when it comes to children’s mental health services,” Freeny said.

“Some families will only have to travel for 1 or 2 hours to meet face-to-face with a mental health professional, which means there are other barriers and challenges to overcome, such as childcare, time off from work, and transportation,” Dr. It’s about Freeny.
