Fortnite already looked pretty impressive on PS5 – but God of War: Ragnarok really took us by surprise. But the release of Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1 elevates the game even higher. Epic Games (opens in new tab) It has integrated some next-gen capabilities made possible by Unreal Engine 5.1 and the results look stunning.
Unreal Engine 5’s virtualized geometry system, Nanite, has improved the island’s architectural geometry. The developer says buildings are “created in real time from millions of polygons and modeled every single brick, stone, wood plank and masonry tile.” flower and blade of grass are modeled.
Meanwhile, the illumination and reflection system Lumen adds ray-traced reflections and real-time global illumination at 60 frames per second. As characters respond to changing lighting, virtual shadow maps improve shadow quality with both modeled details and shadows for characters, including hats and other minor details. Finally, the new Temporary Super Resolution promises “high-quality visuals at high frame rates” as an upgrade to Temporal Anti-Aliasing.
Fans applaud the update on Twitter. “Fortnite is the first game I’ve seen that does a cartoon-like art style with realistic graphics and looks really good.” one person wrote. How does this affect creators? Epic Games encourages creators to show their audiences what the Unreal Engine is capable of. It recommends setting the rendering mode to DirectX 12 to show Nanite and Lumen, automatically adjusting the Graphics Quality video settings, and setting the Temporary Super Resolution to find the balance between visual fidelity and frame rate in every streaming or recording setup.
