Solihull lake incident news – latest: Four children rescued from freezing water fight for their lives

Many people are thought to be in critical condition after being removed from the lake

Four children rescued from a lake in Solihull are struggling to survive in hospital after suffering a heart attack.

After the fire department was notified that as many as six children were in the lake at Babbs Mill Park, the search for water continues desperately amid fears that others are missing.

At 2:36 p.m. Sunday, emergency services were called to the lake in Kingshurst, with reports from the scene and social media stating that children were playing on the ice and falling into the lake.

Local fire, police and ambulance chiefs said at a press conference last night that the rescued children had suffered a heart attack while being taken out and were taken to hospital where they were staying on life support.

However, authorities did not confirm the gender or identity of the minors involved.

A weekend of snow and freezing frost has arrived, with severe conditions to continue for the next few days, including temperatures as low as minus 10C.

Fearing the disappearance of the two children, the police said, “There will be no more search and rescue.”

While emergency services searched the water, worried that two more children would be missing, authorities confirmed that it “will no longer be a search and rescue operation”.

“Given the temperature of the water, the age of the occupants, and the length of stay there, the expert medical advice given to us at the scene was that this would no longer be a search and rescue operation. West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service district commander Richard Stanton said after the four children were rescued:

West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service regional commander Richard Stanton said at a press conference yesterday: “When our firefighters arrived, a large number of police officers and the public were trying to reach and rescue the children in the water.

“Our crews dived into the water, swam to the first child, and our expert-trained firefighters, including technical rescue, rescued three more children.
