SKY HIGH: Christmas travelers suffer as airfare prices rise through 2022

Passengers at an airport outside of Washington DC reacted to flight prices during the holiday season and shared how it affected their travel plans.

Savannah, of Salt Lake City, told Fox News that the airfare was “much higher than usual.” “It was definitely more than we had budgeted for or expected.”

“We needed to get help,” Braydon, who was traveling with Savannah, told Fox News. “We don’t usually ask for help traveling to see family, but they are always willing to help because of the prices.”

But Evan, who travels from Los Angeles, said airfare is cheap this holiday season if you plan ahead.

“It was super affordable for the whole family,” Evan said outside of Reagan National Airport.

According to Hopper, Christmas airfare was down 11% from 2019, with round-trip domestic flights averaging around $339. Flight ticket prices for last-minute flights decreased by 15% compared to a year ago.

But for other holidays like Thanksgiving, travel plans have remained high this year. Domestic round-trip airfare for the week of Thanksgiving an average of 468 dollars According to Kayak, if travelers booked in early November, that’s a 48% increase compared to 2021.

“We got our tickets about a month and a half ago, so it was reasonable enough,” said Gary of South Dakota. “I advise people to plan ahead.”

Inflation fell more-than-expected to 7.1% in November, after a four-year high of 9.1% in June. Still, some travelers were still feeling the impact of the high costs.

“Prices are definitely cheaper than pre-COVID, but still quite expensive,” said Alex of Los Angeles.

Braydon told Fox News that if airfare prices “continue to exceed where they are, it will definitely make us hesitate to travel for future vacations.”

But some said they would travel on holidays no matter the cost.

“It was high for the holidays, but it was worth it,” said Valerie of Missouri. “Because I see my family.”

A traveler from Dallas said a Fox News flight ticket wouldn’t stop him from visiting loved ones.

“I’m going to see my family for the holidays,” she said. “I don’t care what it costs.”
