Thanks to certification bodies like China’s TENAA, we usually get almost official details about the phones long before they’re released, and that’s now with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Detected by MyFixGuide (opens in new tab)a TENAA listing (opens in new tab) – It should be based on official information provided by Samsung – It almost completely reveals the technical specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
These include a 6.8-inch 1440 x 3088 display, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage options, 8GB or 12GB of RAM, and a 4,855mAh battery with a minimum capacity. 5,000mAh typical capacity.
The chipset is not named, but it is listed to clock up to 3.36GHz, consistent with the overclocked version of the rumored Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for the Galaxy S23 series.
As for the cameras, these apparently include one 108MP, two 12MP and a 2MP at the back, and another 12MP on the front. One of the rear cameras (probably one of the 12MP ones) is said to offer 10x optical zoom, as we’d expect. But this camera setup doesn’t sound right in general.
It seems unlikely that Samsung will put a 2MP camera on such a high-end smartphone, so perhaps that’s a typo and should be 200MP – especially since there are rumors that such a sensor will be included.
But then we wouldn’t have thought there would be a 108MP camera either. Since the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 40 MP selfie camera, there will be a significant reduction in megapixels if the front camera is 12 MP.
As such, we would seriously take these camera specs with the help of salt, and while the rest of the listed specs sound convincing, it also casts doubt on them despite the reputable nature of the source.
In any case, the list also mentions dimensions of 163.4 x 78.1 x 8.9 mm, a weight of 233 g and of course 5G support. We will assess the veracity of these leaks very soon, as the Samsung Galaxy S23 series is likely to launch in early 2023.
Analysis: How this compares to Galaxy S22 Ultra
If we get these specs right, it’s likely that many things on this phone will be similar to the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
The screen size and resolution are the same, the dimensions and weight are very similar (suggesting that the design will be similar too), and the typical battery capacity will likely be the same. Storage and RAM amounts are also similar, but you can get the S22 Ultra with 128GB of storage, which isn’t listed here.
The main differences are the chipset and cameras. For the first, this is a typical and expected upgrade, but this should mean that the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is much more powerful than its predecessor.
For the latter, as mentioned above, we are deeply skeptical of these camera specs, but for reference, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra features a 108MP main sensor, 12MP ultra-wide, 10MP telephoto (offering 3x optical zoom) and 10MP telephoto offering 10x optical zoom.
We would expect the same lens types and zoom levels on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, but some may have changed megapixels; most notably is the 200 MP primary sensor, an upgrade that could help make the Galaxy S23 Ultra more secure. It has taken its place among the best camera phones.
