Born in Derbyshire, England, Vivienne Westwood worked as a primary school teacher before starting her fashion career. In the early 1970s, with then-partner Malcom McLaren, she founded a clothing store called Let It Rock on the legendary King’s Road in Chelsea, London. Frequented by punk rock bands, the shop was later renamed Sex and McLaren and gained notoriety by wearing his designs, for example.

Westwood held its first proper fashion show in 1981, referred to as the Pirate Collection, inspired by the use of British and French history.
