His work shows clear influence from his architectural background and the ‘space age’ generation. After studying architecture at l’École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in the mid-fifties, he got a job at Auguste Perret, France’s leading reinforced concrete manufacturer, where he worked for ten years. In the 1960s Rabanne was making jewelry for top fashion houses such as Dior, Givenchy and Balenciaga, where her mother worked as a head tailor. With her experience in physical material manipulation and meticulous detailing, she saw the intricate assemblies of chain mail and sequins in her early work in the fashion world. These daring metallic minis were worn by Jane Birkin, Audrey Hepburn, and Jane Fonda—especially in the 1968 cult sci-fi movie Barbarella, where she was the costume designer.
