Have you ever wondered what you would look like as a medieval knight? 18th century bride? A flapper from the 1920s? Number? Well, after checking out this AI Time Machine feature, you might want to rethink it – at least I was.
This feature is from the pedigree company MyHeritage. It introduced other interesting features such asanimating images of people to make them appear as if they are moving and , which takes this a step further and makes it look like a person is telling their life story by moving their face and mouth. Now you can upload your own photos using the new AI Time Machine feature and then see how the AI thinks you would look in different historical periods.
If you want to try it, you can go to the MyHeritage website (the feature is not yet available in the app). On the main page, hover over “Photos” in the top menu bar and then select “AI Time Machine”. Upload 10-25 photos (MyHeritage recommends uploading a mix of full-body shots, close-ups, upper-body shots, and side profiles). The company offers a free trial in some US states, but otherwise you’ll have to pay $10 to use the feature.
I gave it a try and was surprised – and a little worried – at the results – but it was undoubtedly fun. I wondered how this would end up with my hijab, and the result, well, was interesting. In some images the AI incorporates my hijab into a pirate outfit, and in others it seems to have decided that I have long, blonde, wavy hair. The AI pictured me as an Ottoman Empire bride (another way of working with a headscarf, I guess), a WWII nurse, a woman from the 50s, and an American Pioneer with a pirate. Here are some of the most interesting examples.
Of course, AI isn’t perfect, so here are two slightly disturbing examples:
MyHeritage makes it easy to download and share these creations on social media if you feel compelled. Otherwise, you can add it to the list of things you didn’t know the AI could or should do.
