LA County DA is keen on John Legend car theft case, prosecutor calls it an insult to crime victims

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has dealt with a case in which singer John Legend’s luxury car was nearly stolen this week, which some prosecutors in the office called blatant special treatment to a high-profile supporter of District Attorney George Gascon. .

Assistant District Attorney John Lewin told Fox News Digital about his boss’ priorities, “Attempted car theft is a crime that George Gascon has little interest in prosecuting.”

Legend was at a recording studio Monday when a suspect tried to steal his Porsche, TMZ reported. The Los Angeles Police Department told the famous news outlet that a man was walking towards the vehicle, sitting inside the vehicle and looking for keys or another way to start the vehicle.

The security guards at the studio, who saw the incident, called the police. When the police teams arrived at the scene, the suspect claimed that the vehicle belonged to him. He got out and started walking. He was arrested after a short pedestrian chase on suspicion of attempted automobile theft.

In an email to prosecutors seized by Fox News on Wednesday, the DA’s acting vice president, John Harlan, said he wanted to be kept up to date with the cycle in the case.

“News sources are reporting that an unarmed person has been arrested somewhere in Los Angeles for attempting to steal John Legend’s Porsche – the case probably ends today,” the email says. “Please be on the lookout for this case,” Harlan wrote, before asking two others to be notified via text message if the case appears on the prosecutor’s records.

Fox News Digital, the DA’s office, reached out to representatives of the LAPD, Harlan, and Legend but received no response.

“The idea that a senior executive is going to publish a full-point bulletin to bring attention to this case stinks of exclusive access and unnecessary influence,” Lewin said. “Taking such action is an offense and insult to any law-abiding citizen of Los Angeles who is a victim of crime and has been met with general indifference or outright hostility by this district attorney and administration.”

Lewin, who won a murder conviction against the late Real last year, added, “In fact, it seems that the deputy chief of staff involved has issued a bulletin with all the points to spy on this case, as if he was tracking the Hillside Stranger.” – estate boy Robert Durst.

The Hillside Strangler murders of the late ’70s were a series of deaths involving female victims who were raped, tortured, and killed in the hills of Los Angeles. The two cousins were eventually arrested for the crimes.

Lewin said the legend was recorded as a strong supporter of Gascon and the rights of criminal suspects.

He supported Gascon in his bid to fire then-Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey in 2020. Working on a progressive platform, Gascon has since come under fire for many of his directives, which critics say allows criminals, and has survived two recall attempts.

“Our new District Attorney in Los Angeles, George Gascón, announced some big reforms on his first day,” Legend tweeted upon Gascon’s inauguration. “I’m proud to have supported his election. This is the kind of change we vote for and the kind of change we need to bring our system closer to true justice.”

He also supported Chesa Boudin, who was fired as San Francisco’s attorney general during a recall election in June amid the rise in crime.

During the 2022 election cycle, Legend lent his support to several district attorney candidates in several states.

“The District Attorney’s election is crucial to improving our criminal justice system, and 2022 is a year of thousands of races,” he said in April.
