Heeraben, mother of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, dies at 99

Heeraben Modi, mother of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has died at the age of 99.

Modi, who often visits his mother on important occasions and festivals, performed his last ritual Friday morning in Gandhinagar, western Gujarat state.

“A glorious century is under God’s feet,” Modi said in a tweet to pay tribute to his mother.

“In Maa, I’ve always felt that trinity that includes a hermit’s journey, the symbol of a selfless Karmayogi, and a life of values.”

Heeraben was hospitalized on Wednesday for high blood pressure problems.

On Friday, the UN Mehta Heart Hospital said he passed away at 3:30 p.m. local time while he was being treated at the hospital.

Mr. Modi was seen visiting the hospital to meet his 100th-year-old mother and stayed there for over an hour.

Born on June 18, 1923, Heeraben has five sons and a daughter – Somabhai, Amritbhai, Narendra, Prahlad, Pankaj and daughter Vasantiben.

The Prime Minister visited her mother to celebrate her 99th birthday and wrote an emotional note on her blog: “My mother is as simple as she is extraordinary. Just like all mothers!”

She traced her mother’s struggles in her childhood, saying she lost her mother in the Spanish Flu epidemic and didn’t see her love growing up.

“She doesn’t even remember my grandmother’s face, the comfort of her lap. He spent his entire childhood without a mother. He couldn’t have given his mother a tantrum like we all do,” she added.

“Like all of us, she couldn’t rest in her mother’s lap. He could not even go to school and could not learn to read and write.

“His childhood was spent in poverty and deprivation.”

On Friday, Mr. Modi remembered his mother’s words when she met him for his 99th birthday.

“When I met him on his 100th birthday, he said something I always keep in mind: Work with intelligence, live life with purity,” she wrote in Hindi and Gujarati.

Immediately after the announcement, condolences poured in as many ministers, members of his party and opposition, as well as other prominent figures from all walks of life, expressed their sadness at the loss of Modi.

“I offer my deepest condolences and love to him and his family at this difficult time,” said Rahul Gandhi, an opposition Congress party politician.

Chairman Drupadi Murmu said Mr. Modi has internalized the spirit of “honor your mother as God” and Heeraben’s values ​​in life.

“The hundred years of hard life of Heeraba, mother of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, is a symbol of Indian ideals,” he said. “I pray for the peace of the holy spirit. My condolences to his family!”

Modi went on with his job after burning his mother and attended the scheduled opening ceremony of the Vande Bharat express train in West Bengal via videoconference, almost stopping the first train.

Speaking at the ceremony, Modi apologized for not being able to physically attend the event due to the death of his mother before he started his speech.

West Bengal’s prime minister, Mamata Banerjee, who has been one of the most critical of the prime minister, urged her to take a rest, saying “your mother is our mother”.

“Please get some rest, I don’t know how to console your mother’s death, your mother is our mother. I remember my mother too,” he told Mr Modi.
