Before welcoming Elon Musk on stage in San Francisco on Sunday, Dave Chappelle encouraged fans to “make some noise for the richest man in the world.”
And they did – booing the billionaire tech boss out loud for almost five minutes.
Chappelle invited Musk to a stand-up show with Chris Rock at the Chase Center in San Francisco, where the comedian sarcastically told the audience to “shut up”, to no avail. The newly minted Twitter owner, who wore a “I Love Twitter” t-shirt to the event, also received applause from the crowd at the end of the show.
Chappelle can be heard saying “I see cheers and boos” in a video Posted on Twitter by @SteveGoffman.
“You didn’t expect that, did you?” said Musk.
“Some of the people you fired seem to be in the audience,” Chappelle joked, referring to multiple Twitter employees that Musk fired shortly after purchasing the social media platform.
“Hey, hold on a minute,” Chappelle continued in an unsuccessful attempt to quiet the crowd as Musk stood on stage quietly in San Francisco, where Twitter’s headquarters is located.
“Looks like there’s a rough road ahead,” the comic relented. “But you know something? All these people booing – and I’m just pointing out the obvious – their seats suck, and I get that.
“Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Listen, listen, mom-, this n- isn’t even trying to die on Earth. The whole business model is ‘F – Earth. I’m going anyway.’ Do whatever you want. Take me with you [Musk] … I’m going to Mars. What kind of p – they got there, that’s what we’re going to do.
Musk was able to say a short “thank you for putting me on stage” as the booing continued, while Chappelle continued to brag about riding jetpacks and doing “baller s” with the Tesla executive.
Dave, what can I say? Musk said there are about three and a half minutes left until the boo-fest.
“Don’t say anything,” Chappelle advised. “It just spoils the moment. Do you hear that voice, Elon? It’s the voice of civil unrest pending. … Booming isn’t the best thing you can do.”
Both Musk and Chappelle have recently come under scrutiny for their divisive behavior. The SpaceX founder has been heavily criticized for his turbulent Twitter takeover, while the stand-up has been denounced for making transphobic remarks on the 2021 Netflix special.
“I’m your ally,” Chappelle told the crowd in San Francisco after stopping by Musk. “I wish peace and the joy of feeling free to everyone in this auditorium. May your pursuit of happiness make you happy. Amine. Thank you very much San Francisco. No city in the world has ever been so kind… Good night.”
