Traditionally, German clubs have been less active during the winter transfer window than teams from the other four major leagues. This includes Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. But things could be different for Bayern this winter, with World Cup injuries and Manuel Neuer’s long absence.
“As you know, I’m not a fan of the winter transfer window,” the Bayern sporting director said in a recent interview with Sport Bild. But a lot happened during the World Cup break, so I’m not ignoring anything.”
The number one priority will be a new goalkeeper. Here the decision is very solid between Alexander Nübel and Yann Sommer. Bayern has now informed Nübel that talks with Monaco are ongoing. Rekordmeister will give him full support if they choose to bring him back instead of signing Sommer – this will include open competition with Neuer if he returns from injury.
Another question was whether Bayern Munich would sign a new centre-back after Lucas Hernández suffered an end-of-season ACL injury at the World Cup. “We are well equipped in defense with the top three players Matthijs de Ligt, Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Hernández,” Salihamdzic said. A comeback is planned.”
This should ostensibly end the search for a new centre-back, but with Benjamin Pavard potentially leaving the club, there may be a need to sign a flexible defender after this window. Bayern’s favorite solution is Josko Gvardiol, but RB Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl has made it clear that he will not sell the Croatian this winter or next summer, and the €110 million ($116 million) exit clause in 2024 will be too high for Bayern. Recordmeister.
” [Pavard] “Contract status means we would be doing some things wrong if we didn’t follow the market closely,” said Salihamidzic. “As always, we keep our eyes peeled.” TZ’s Philipp Kessler recently signed Olympique Lyon’s right-back Malo Gusto to Bayern. Gusto has also sometimes assisted as a centre-back and can also play on the left and thus ticks a few boxes.
In addition, Bayern has a good foothold in the French market. But Gusto will likely have a long list of players Rekordmeister is interested in. Overall, Gusto won’t be the last player to be tied as the club needs to add a defender.
While Bayern are well-equipped in midfield, the offense will still need some work, especially after the signing of Konrad Laimer for the summer has been confirmed. For now, the decision makers are more than happy to go into the second half of the season with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Mathys Tel. But with Choupo-Moting’s contract situation still unsolved and The Wire is still developing, don’t be surprised if Bayern sign someone for next season.
No doubt, Harry Kane remains the primary target for the summer of 2023. However, it’s no surprise that Marcus Thuram and Randal Kolo Muani have been linked to a recent move to Säbener Straße.
Thuram and Kolo Muani were excellent for France in the World Cup, and their respective work in the Bundesliga is also impressive. The two therefore fit two key criteria: proven stars in the Bundesliga and well-known for a global football powerhouse.
