Auld Lang Syne: The history and lyrics of the traditional New Year tune

CNN

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, voices around the world will rekindle the age-old tradition of singing “Auld Lang Syne” to bid farewell to last year.

“Auld Lang Syne”, roughly meaning “time passed”, was written by Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1788 and is thought to be based on a Scottish folk song.

Despite efforts to arch the melody every New Year’s Eve, very few people seem to really know the words.

Don’t pretend to be slurring words on New Year’s Eve this year. Fortunately, we’ve put the lyrics below so you can serenade yourself and all your friends into the New Year.

If the acquaintance is forgotten,

And it never occurred to you?

If the acquaintance is forgotten,

And auld lang syne.

CHOIR

mate for aul lang syne,

For aul lang syne.

We’ll have a glass of goodness yet,

For aul lang syne.

And it will definitely be your pint!

And I will definitely be mine!

And we’ll get a glass of goodness,

For aul lang syne.

CHORUS AGAIN

We’ll run about the braes

And gowans good pu’d

But we walked around on a tired foot

It didn’t take long.

CHORUS AGAIN

We paid for the burning

Morning sun until dinner.

But the seas between us roared

It didn’t take long.

CHORUS AGAIN

And there is a hand, my reliable fire!

And gie is your one hand!

And we will choose the right guide,

For aul lang syne.

CHORUS AGAIN

Should old acquaintance be forgotten?

And it never occurred to you?

Should old acquaintance be forgotten,

And a very, very long time ago.

CHORUS AGAIN

And a long, long time ago, dear

A long time ago.

We’ll take a glass of courtesy yet

A long time ago.

And you will definitely get your pint!

And I will definitely get mine!

And yet we’ll take a glass of courtesy

A long time ago.

CHORUS AGAIN

We both ran in the hills

And he drew daisies beautifully;

But we wandered so tired

A long time ago.

CHORUS AGAIN

We both rowed in the creek,

From morning sun to dinner;

But the seas between us roared

A long time ago.

CHORUS AGAIN

And there is a help, my trusted friend!

And give us your hand!

And we’ll get a deep draft of goodwill

A long time ago.

CHORUS AGAIN
