A’s Sign Jake Fishman, Deolis Guerra to Second Division Deals

A’s announced A series of off-duty invites for Spring Training this afternoon. Rescuers were among those invited to the camp. Jake Fishman and Deolis Guerrashows that both recently joined the organization in minor league deals. Oakland also signs first goalkeeper Kevin Cron.

Fishman reached the big leagues for the first time with the Marlins in 2022. Southpaw made several separate appearances with Miami and made seven appearances in total. He had 11 strokes, six strokes while allowing for five runs, and three walks. The Sinkerballer averaged just 87.5 MPH on its speedball and just under 76 MPH on its slider, but it had a good year in Triple-A.

Fishman posted a 2.25 ERA after playing 56 games with Miami’s top affiliate. He engaged ground players an excellent 54.2% and hit a handy 23.1% of his opponents. The Union College product walked 8.5% of hitters encountered in the minors and kept the same-handed hitters in 142 plate appearances in Triple-A at a terrible .191/.270/.270 line. Despite his strong performance, he was eliminated from Miami’s 40-man roster at the end of the season and qualified as a free agent. Also, a former member of the Blue Jays organization, Fishman will be vying for a situational role similar to the one he currently has. Sam Moll in Oakland.

Guerra is a familiar face for Oakland fans. The 33-year-old finished second on the team in relief kicks in 2021, shooting 65 2/3 frames in 53 rounds. He had a solid, if not outstanding year, posting a 4.11 ERA, putting out roughly average batting and walking rates (23% and 7.4%, respectively). A veteran journeyman who was previously eligible for the Pirates, Angels, Brewers and Phillies at the MLB level, Guerra seemed to have taken on a multi-year role in the Oakland arena.

However, that got out of the way before the 2022 season started. Guerra struggled with some elbow pain in Spring Practice and had Tommy John surgery in one week of the regular season. He spent the whole year on the injured list and did not bid at the end of the season. While the A’s weren’t ready to carry him on the 40-man roster all winter after a lost season, they quickly brought him back with a chance to once again earn a spot. Given the mid-April timing of his surgery, it’s unlikely that Guerra will be ready to take the bump in the show game. He’ll likely start the year on the minor league casualties and head to Triple-A Las Vegas after he rehabilitates and gets back to playing.

In February, the 30-year-old Cron made 47 appearances for the Diamondbacks in 2019-20. The right-handed hitter didn’t perform well in this very limited appearance, but smashed in a .319/.405/.651 clip in over 800 Triple-A plate appearances in his career (despite being in an extremely favorable setting in Reno). ). These monster numbers have given the Cron look in both Japan and South Korea over the past two years, but it hasn’t had much success at either stop. He hit .231/.270/.431 with NPB’s Hiroshima Carp in 2021, and this year with KBO’s SSG Landers he hit 259 laps to the plate, posting the .222/.255/.420 mark.

Outfielder is included in the non-squad invitees list cody thomas and field player Ernie Clement. Both were appointed to be commissioned in the last days, but were disowned and remained in the organization on definite assignments, apparently due to waivers. Thomas debuted with 10 MLB games last season, while Clement reached .184/.243/.209 in 2022 in 70 combined events between the Guardians and the A’s.

Oakland also announced that he is a fielder Vimael Machin refused a definitive assignment after the waiver went unclaimed. As a player who has been beaten multiple times in his career, he will go to free agency in the minor leagues, as he is entitled. The left-handed infielder posted a .220/.300/.287 streak with a homer in 253 games last season. It didn’t do much on the plate during parts of its three major league campaigns. With a much more impressive .307/.400/.468 streak in episodes of four Triple-A seasons, Machín is considering a minor league opportunity elsewhere.
